WONDERKID EVAN FERGUSON WANTS BRIGHTON STAY OVER MANCHESTER UNITED TRANSFER - PAPER ROUND
'A CAPTAIN'S MOMENT' - RIO FERDINAND PRAISES MAN UTD SKIPPER BRUNO FERNANDES FOR BRILLIANT VOLLEY WINNER AGAINST BURNLEY
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was impressed by Bruno Fernandes' match-winning contribution during the 1-0 win over Burnley on Saturday night, describing his excellent volleyed goal as a "captain's moment." There was also praise for veteran defender Jonny Evans, who provided the assist and was important as United had to dig deep in defence.
Rio Ferdinand paid tribute to a “captain’s moment” from Bruno Fernandes as Manchester United beat Burnley 1-0 on Saturday night.
United were coming off the back of a disappointing 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich in midweek in the UEFA Champions League, and had endured a poor start to their Premier League campaign.
With 10 players unavailable for injury or disciplinary reasons before the match, United called up Jonny Evans to the starting line-up once more, and it was the Northern Ireland central defender who set up captain Fernandes for an outstanding goal.
Reminiscent of Wayne Rooney’s angled pass over the top of the defence for Robin van Persie to volley home against Aston Villa, Evans found Fernandes who picked the flight of the ball to meet it with his right foot and score the only goal of the game on 45 minutes.
Erik ten Hag’s men were able to hold on to move up to eighth place in the Premier League ahead of back-to-back games against Crystal Palace next week, first up in the EFL Cup before next weekend’s league tie.
Speaking on TNT Sports after the match, former United defender Ferdinand thought taking three points was vital.
“We’re in a results-driven game,” he said. “Coming away somewhere like this. Old school, tight, you know you’re going to be under pressure. The fans are going to get behind their team and I thought they were really good tonight, Burnley. They put United under a lot of pressure.
“What United did well tonight is what they haven’t done this season, is weathered the storm.”
He picked out both Evans and Fernandes for their contributions, with the former important at both ends, having had a headed opener ruled out, as well as providing the assist for Fernandes.
He continued: “I think Jonny Evans was outstanding, marshalled that backline very well. Showed his leadership skills, his experience, played his part in the goal and a captain’s moment from Bruno Fernandes.
“I think it’s a huge result tonight, the narrative has been very negative of late and you need to stop that. Three points does that.”
Peter Crouch was full of praise for Fernandes, adding: “You’ve just got to admire the technique. Fantastic ball from Jonny Evans who was fantastic. Just love those kind of finishes, watching the flight of the ball, the execution.
“I think that was the difference today, Bruno Fernandes had the world-class finishing technique.”
